    Head-to-Head

    • France and Germany will meet for the first time in a European Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

    • France and Germany met each other nine times in world level major tournaments (Olympic Games, World Championship, World Cup, World League, Volleyball Nations League and Grand Champions Cup). France have won six and lost three.

    • France fought back from a 2-0 set deficit to win their semi-final against Slovenia: 15-9 in the fifth set.

    • It was France's first win in a five-set match at a world level major tournament since their semi-final victory against United States (3-2) in the 2018 Volleyball Nations League. France had lost the next four five-set matches at major world level.

    • France can qualify for back-to-back Olympic Games. They also achieved this in 1988 and 1992.

    • Jean Patry (22) was France's top scorer against Slovenia. He is the team's most prolific scorer in CEV Tokyo Volleyball European Qualification 2020, on 71 total points.

    • Earvin Ngapeth has scored 55 points for France in this tournament, including eight points from blocks. Barthélémy Chinenyeze also scored eight points from blocks.

    • Yacine Louati leads his team on eight aces.

    Germany

    • Germany saw off Bulgaria in their semi-final on Thursday. They won 3-1 in front of a home crowd.

    • Germany (NOC) are hoping to qualify for their third Olympic Games, after 2008 and 2012. East Germany (GDR) appeared in 1968 and 1972, while West Germany (FRG) participated in 1972.

    • György Grozer was Germany's top scorer in the group phase (43 total points) and also claimed top scoring honours for Germany against Bulgaria – 17 points.

    • Grozer has scored six points per set on average in CEV Tokyo Volleyball European Qualification 2020, the highest average of all players with at least three matches played.

    • Grozer has the highest ace-per-set average of all players with more than one ace – 1.00 (10 aces in 10 sets played). He leads CEV Tokyo Volleyball European Qualification 2020 with 10 total aces, alongside Bulgaria's Viktor Yosifov.

    • Denys Kaliberda produced five of Germany's 13 stuff blocks against Bulgaria. His teammates Marcus Böhme (7) and Tobias Krick (7) have scored most points from blocks for Germany in this tournament. Kaliberda has six points from blocks in total.

Actually, it is much more than just that – since this venue has played host to an impressive number of major international competitions as well, such as the 2002 FIVB Women’s World Championship, 2003 EuroVolley Men, 2013 EuroVolley Women, as well as the historic CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals back in May – to name only a few highlights. The Hall also plays as hosts to the Berlin Recycling Volleys, Germany's most decorated volleyball club with 10 Bundesliga titles and a CEV cup title in 2015/2016.     France hammers 3-0 win over Germany to snatch Tokyo 2020 ticket

    France stamped their ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, triumphantly winning the men’s CEV continental qualifier. In Friday’s big final, coach Laurent Tillie’s squad disappointed the home crowd in Berlin with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-23) victory over hosts Germany.

    Upon spiking for Germany’s first point, in the second rally of the match, opposite Gyorgy Grozer landed on Nicolas Le Goff’s foot. Luckily, the injury did not send him off the court and he stayed on to the relief of the huge crowd on the packed stands at the Max-Schmeling-Halle. Grozer went on to score as many as seven points in the set, but it was not enough for his team to win it. After 16-16, France ran off on a five-point run with Earvin Ngapeth serving and Le Goff delivering the kill blocks, and then kept pace through the 25-20 close.

    Germany recovered from an early four-point French lead in the second set, but only for a while. With Jean Patry scoring away both in offence and from the serving line, France kept the pressure on the host team and mastered one more 25-20 win, this time closed off on a spike by Yacine Louati.

    The German attempt at a comeback lasted through most of the hard-fought third set as they maintained a two or three-point lead through 18-16. In the money time, however, it was once again the French that stayed more focused to step upfront, reach match point and see Ngapeth convert it, hammering the last point of the tournament with a sizzling ace for 25-23.

    Grozer’s 20 points made him the best scorer of the match, while Patry contributed 14, including four aces, to the French triumph. Le Goff impressed with six kill blocks to his name.

    Laurent Tillie, head coach of France: "We were waiting this moment since Rio. We had a lot of problem during the preparation of this tournament. But with this young team we qualified here, surviving two or three matches: huge feelings. We are survivors: our attitude was very impressive."

    Andrea Giani, head coach of Germany: “France played very well. I think they are a team which has shown 100% in their serve. Four guys were excellent in their serve. They worked very well in the block and the defence and it’s not easy. In Volleyball we think about mistake or you have a bad receive’ but no, it is more. Their serve in the first set was a really good serve. We tried to find solutions, to stay in the match. We tried it in the third set, we tried it the whole time. But we made too many mistakes today. I don’t like losing the match. My philosophy is to think about this tournament. We played well, but this was the last match. This, for us, was the last chance to go to Tokyo. Bravo to the guys of France.”
